Dr. Simon Antony Hull is an Associate Professor and Professional Land Surveyor registered with the South African Geomatics Council. With 17 years of teaching experience, Dr. Hull is dedicated to addressing socio-economic inequalities in South Africa and other developing, post-colonial contexts. His eloquence, empathy, and leadership have marked his career, making him a respected figure in his field.

Education 

Dr. Hull’s academic journey began with a BSc in Survey from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, followed by an MSc in Engineering from the University of Cape Town. He later earned a PGCE from UNISA and completed his PhD at the University of Cape Town in 2019, demonstrating his commitment to both technical expertise and educational proficiency.

Experience 

Since joining the University of Cape Town in 2012, Dr. Hull has progressed from lecturer to Associate Professor. His extensive teaching portfolio spans both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Prior to academia, he gained practical experience as a marine surveyor with Fugro Surveys and as a cadastral and engineering surveyor with Biff Lewis Geomatics. His early career included six years of teaching Maths and Science at Nansindlela Combined School.

Research Interest 

Dr. Hull’s research focuses on land administration, land tenure reform, and cadastral systems development, with an emphasis on utilizing Geographic Information Systems to address Sustainable Development Goals. He is a regular peer reviewer for local and international journals and conferences.

Awards 

Dr. Hull has been recognized for his contributions to land administration and geomatics education. Notably, he chaired a joint Working Group of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) on land administration education and has consulted for organizations like the FAO and IFAD on frontier technologies for tenure.
