Following his academic achievements, Lanka pursued a Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology at the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, from 2012 to 2016. Subsequently, he ventured into teaching as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Kelaniya.

Lanka's contributions to the field of environmental microbiology and biotechnology are noteworthy. His Ph.D. thesis, titled "Characterization and biological prospecting of phyllosphere microorganisms capable of aromatic hydrocarbon degradation," reflects his dedication to understanding and harnessing the capabilities of microorganisms in environmental processes.
